Another Africa T-Shirt

We made t-shirts in my commercial art today. I really wasn't quite sure what 'logo' or design to put on it... so I decided to make an 'Africa T-shirt'. It didn't turn out as cool or as perfect as I would have liked, but here it is:

April Meeting

Hello all! We had another Africa Team Meeting today! It was very eventful.

We first split up into our Teams (Medical and VBS). The VBS Group filled out a Spiritual Gifts Inventory, which helped us figure out what our spiritual gifts are. My highest were faith and hospitality, which basically means I have strong faith in God, and I love to serve people. I think that sounds like me...

Part of being on the Africa Team means that you have to be involved in the VBS at the church. So we are planning that... it's called Crocodile Dock. That is going to be from June 15th-June 19th.

We then all got back together. We watched a video about that kids that go to the school that was built with our money. They are currently building dormitories for the students. There are about 300 (I think) that go there. They way they do schooling is a little bit different than the way we do it. They have primary school (the same) but, then they have stage one and two. Stage one is like Junior High, and Stage two is like High School. You have to test into them. So, some of the kids in stage one and twelve, while others are sixteen. We also found out that not only will we be running a VBS, but also a Youth Camp. Only a few get to work with the Youth, and I still haven't decided exactly which one I would like to do more...

I finally got my itinerary! Unfortunately United Airlines couldn't fit about 10 of us on any flights, so we are flying Delta. Sadly, this means that we leave a day later. We aren't traveling as long, because rather than four flights, we only have three. The rest of the group gets to fly to London and stay there for about 5-10 hours! So, I'm a bit jealous. We get to fly into JFK, and then to Dakar (another part of Africa). It still should be fun though!

We also got a brief schedule! It is as follows:
July 22nd- Depart for Kenya (Large group)
July 23rd- Depart for Kenya (Small group)... This would be me.
July 24th- Arrive in Kenya, Travel to Nakuru (about two hours). Settle in.
July 25th- Set up clinic, VBS, and Youth Camp.
July 26th- Church with Josam. My youth leader (Jamie) said that this is going to be very powerful and exciting. She said everyone is upbeat and VERY into worship. I'm excited!
July 27th to July 31st- Clinic/VBS/Youth Camp
August 1st- Clinic/VBS/Youth Camp until noon. Then clean-up.
August 2nd- Church with Josam.
August 3rd and 4th- Clinic/Kids program at Squatter's Hill. Jamie said that we are going here (which is the slums) just to run the clinic again, and play with all the kids.
August 5th- Safari at Lake Nakuru.
August 6th- Crater/Falls, Pack/Group Time
August 7th- Go to Nairobi Village Market, then Depart from Kenya. Jamie said that this Market is HUGE. When the vendors see white people, they freak.
August 8th- Arrive in SLC.

Then, we got our Team Shirts! There are really cool. They say "ihsani haiozi" on them, which is a Swahili proverb that means "kindness does not go rotten". Attached is a horrible picture of me wearing it.

That about wraps up what happened at the meeting this month!
Look again next month for more updates!

March Meeting

It's been a while since I've had the chance to update you all on the March Meeting!

We started off by talking about our last fundraiser. We are hosting a golf tournament on May 30th. Each team member needs to find at least one foursome and needs three silent auction items. I won't bore you with all of the details though.

We then moved onto talking about Vacation Bible School. When Jamie announced that we would be doing The Kingdom of the Son I got really excited. That's the first Vacation Bible School that I've ever helped with. I decided to do crafts. It's hard to come up with crafts to do with hundreds of kids, especially when you are limited to a certain amount of room for supplies. We already have some great ideas though, so I'm sure it will all work out.

Jamie also announced that we would be having a soccer cleat drive. Kids in Africa are in love with soccer. They make balls out of trash, and pretty much play all day. The only problem is that they can't get on a Kenyan Recreational League team unless they have matching shirts and pants. Luckily, a minor league team (who's name has slipped my mind) has donated all of their old jerseys to us! We have all kinds of gear, we are just missing cleats. Hopefully the cleat drive will be a success!
